The survey provides several key insights that are worth summarizing:

  1. Industry in Transition: The survey results reveal an industry in major flux, with sharp differences of views about the role of Visual FoxPro (VFP) applications in the current technology landscape. Despite facing significant end-of-life challenges and competing technologies, some participants still view VFP as their preferred language/platform. This diversity of opinions highlights the need for best practice advocates and tech support vendors to assist companies in managing their current VFP applications and potential future migrations or modernization efforts.
  2. Modernization Priorities: When considering application modernization, implementing new features emerged as a top priority, with 40% of respondents viewing it as a key motivator and another 28% considering it somewhat important. Interestingly, the ability to work in the cloud, which was a top priority in 2022, has decreased in importance. This shift may be due to many companies having already adapted to cloud environments or the assumption that modern applications inherently have cloud capabilities.
  3. Workflow and Reporting Considerations: The survey showed a split opinion on the importance of changing the application workflow during modernization, with equal numbers of respondents considering it important and not important. However, data from 2022 and 2023 indicated that 57% of respondents viewed workflow changes as a driving factor for modernization. Enhanced reporting capabilities were generally seen as somewhat important but not a decisive factor in migration decisions, possibly because respondents expect improved reporting features to be a natural outcome of modernization efforts.
